A loan helped a member to pay for improved seed, organic inputs and tractor rental, which will allow her and her fellow farmers to escape from subsistence living by farming a larger area with a higher yield.

Memunatu's Female Farmers Group's story

Memunatu (first on the left), the featured borrower of the Memunatu's Female Farmers Group, would like to sincerely thank all Kiva lenders for their first loan. This enabled the group's members to break free from local lenders who were charging them nearly 100% interest. As a result, all group members have fully recovered their businesses, have repaid their first loan and are successfully farming again.

The group is now seeking a second loan to further expand. The global COVID-19 pandemic is causing food shortages in some areas of Sierra Leone, as imported rice becomes more scarce. A second Kiva loan will not only further empower these women, but will enable them to take advantage of the current market for rice, while enhancing food access in Sierra Leone at a time when this is badly needed. The profits will be used to ensure all members' children go to school, and will also be used by the group to create a support fund for young female farmers.
