Rosa, 32, a married woman with three children (ages 9, 8, and 3), has worked in agriculture with her family since childhood. She and her husband work growing mainly potatoes and other vegetables that they sell in the local market.
At the moment Rosa's requesting a loan to invest in agriculture. She plans to buy fertilizer, soil amendments, and seeds.
Part of the income from the business will be for her children's education. Rosa understands the tremendous importance of a good education for a different and better future for her family.
Rosa and seven other women who live in a rural area of the department/state of Quiché speak primarily the Maya language Uspanteko. She's the secretary of Puente de la Amistad's Joya Larga communal bank.
This is the group's first Kiva loan!
They're enthusiastic about the possibilities of expanding their businesses, such as vegetable production, sales of catalogue products, fruit sales, snacks, used clothing sales, and raising animals. They meet monthly with a facilitator from Puente de Amistad who shares information with them about relevant topics in four areas: health, family, women, and businesses. A nurse visits every two months and offers medical exams as part of Puente de Amistad's bonus services.
