“Fajas” are colorful hand embroidered and handwoven belts, often with metallic embroidery, that are wrapped around the waist of the wearer. The traditional blouse or “huipil” is tucked into the “faja”. This is part of the traditional outfit or “traje” of a Maya woman. Erica, a 21-year-old single woman, weaves “fajas”. She weaves daily with her mother. In order to replenish her supply of high-quality thread, Erica is requesting her first Kiva loan.
Erica is a member of the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank ”Las Sembradoras 1” or “The Seeders”, along with 6 other women. Most of the women have little or no formal education. Erica is fortunate to have a high school education and graduated with a secretarial certificate. All of them continue to gain useful information about health, women’s rights/roles, family and business in their monthly meetings. A facilitator uses games, role-playing, pictures and diagrams to share the information. Often, the ladies share what they learn with family members and friends. Another “plus” service of the “Microcredit Plus” program is the “Health for Life” program. Ladies receive health services delivered by a nurse every other month. If the nurse cannot physically attend to the woman, she calls.
