A loan helped hire local employees that will help with the construction of new homes for Puerto Rican communities.

Carla's story

My name is Carla and I am a third generation architect. As I graduated from college I returned to Puerto Rico thinking that I wanted to live and make a difference here on the island. I began looking for jobs following the regular process of becoming an adult. Then, hurricane María hit the island on Sept, 2017. Like most of us, we were uncommunicated for months which made finding a job practically impossible. I then started working with FEMA who was the only employer of the time, and quickly realized that there was something I could do... My people were going through devastating times, lost their homes, their family and their memories. I thought: We do not have to live this way! So I set myself up to design a more cost effective, environmentally friendly, and rapidly produced home that could begin to take us into a more resilient way of life where we can live within adverse climates and also in harmony with nature.

This loan is special because:

It supports a business that is focussed on hiring local employees and supporting minority women.
