A loan helped me to hire a COO, grow my textile line & pursue revitalizing the PA flax industry.

Heidi's story

My path towards owning and operating a small textile business is meandering, but the environment, helping my community, textiles and design have always been central to my well being. The kitchen garden series is an accumulation of my life experience influenced by my ancestral history and the beliefs instilled in me by my family such as the importance of good design, farm-fresh food, and environmental protection are the spirits that support and uphold my business. My family tree of farmers, nurserymen, landscape designers, and architects taught me that hard work leads to success, that food you grow yourself tastes better, and that if you buy nice things and care for them you'll have them forever. Like my hardworking family before me, I was drawn to my own creative pursuits from an early age and I first fell in love with sewing as a young child sitting by the side of a neighbor who sewed monograms the old-fashioned way onto people's heirlooms and clothes for a living. Eventually, my sewing skills led to a career in costume design, but after fifteens years in costumes, I began to see how the textile industry generates a relentless feedback loop where there is a constant need for something new to be purchased, worn, and often used only once.
The kitchen garden series is my dream of bringing all the pieces of my past together into a business that includes growing, designing, and crafting textiles in the region where I was born, while maintaining an active commitment to environmental justice.
