A loan helped to buy some more mulberry plants for her business of making tapa.

Malia's story

Malia is a 53-year-old mother of eight children. Some have grown up and some still rely on Malia and her husband for their daily needs and wants. Her husband is a farmer and it is one of their sources of income.

Malia still insists on running her own business and making her own money. She joined a group of women in their village, and together they make tapa's (a patterned cloth made from the bark of the mulberry tree) once a week. When tapa's are ready, she then sells them to relatives from overseas or at the local market.

Malia applied for a loan to buy mulberry for her tapa making business. Her vision is to continue on running her business and making more money for her family.

This loan is special because:

It provides women with credit in a country where alternative financing is extremely scarce.
