Each fabric has a story behind its elaboration, more than fashion or colors, it represents dedication, family, values, and Mayan worldview. It is an art that has transcended generations with a working woman behind each loom. This type of work has been turned into successful businesses by many women.
One of them is Catarina, 27, a married woman with three years of education. She has a vision of a different future for her family. Catarina, her husband and a worker are dedicated to weaving “cuts” or typical skirts. They deliver five "cuts" per month each month. She shares: “Thanks to my business, I support my husband with the primary education of my three children. I want them to have what it takes for a complete education.” To achieve her goal, Catarina prepares to increase the inventory of her business. She plans to buy rolls of multicolored yarn to continue making more product. This will be possible with the first Kiva loan that Catarina requests.
There are seven women who make up the Puente de Amistad Community Bank “Mujeres de Agua Escondida” and they come from a rural area of the department (state) of Quiché. Despite not having a complete education, they manage their small textile businesses. By training on health, business, women, and families, women expand their knowledge and become empowered. These are benefits these women have access to in Puente de Amistad's “Microcredit Plus” program.
