I'm Luther Johnson, the owner of MakerLisp, a company that I started to offer small embedded computer systems for hobbyists and educators.
On March 19, 2020, I temporarily suspended sales of MakerLisp products to dedicate my time to helping with the effort to combat Covid-19. First, with a group of friends and small businesses, I've been helping to make and donate fabric face masks to hospitals and shelters.
Now I've developed an open source ventilator, made from off the shelf industrial automation parts, recreating simple all-pneumatic (no electric power required) ventilators that have been in service continuously since the late 70's. This machine is easy to assemble, no special tools or skills are required. It is not subject to the current supply chain shortages of existing medical devices and their component parts. The industrial components used are meant to remain in service for years.
This ventilator is called the "MakerVent Model T".
The problem that I aim to solve, is not "How quickly can we build and deploy 10,000 machines ?", but rather, "How can any individual institution, get ONE, now ?". I will likely build and sell machines, yes, but I can imagine hospitals and healthcare organizations buying materials or kits, and building their own, and not having to depend on conventional channels which may become overburdened in a health emergency.
This ventilator is very basic, and does not have many of the features of more advanced products. But it is nearly identical in operation to several ventilators on the market now, and may be a source of simple, reliable, durable, AVAILABLE ventilators, in times of need.

My primary business is providing computer hardware and software systems, for hobbyists, educators, and students, who want to learn and explore the fundamentals of computer science, and to rediscover the joy and simplicity of vintage computers.
I started this business because I missed the immediacy, and the direct, hands-on experience of the earliest personal computers. I've made a machine that recreates that look and feel, with modern hardware manufacturing, in an inexpensive, open, modular, system. The machine is programmed in a dialect of one of the earliest, but most powerful, programming languages, "Lisp". The "MakerLisp" dialect I've created has been especially formulated for small systems, and allows your program to access the "bare metal" of the machine, without layers of other software or operating systems.

What is the purpose of this loan?
This loan will help fund the standards testing, regulatory efforts, and any incremental design and manufacturing iterations required to bring the "MakerVent Model T" to an FDA authorized product, so that this ventilator can be used to help Covid-19 patients in need of ventilators, especially in times of short supply.
This loan will allow me to focus more time and energy on the ventilator, and to convert my company from primarily a hobby, "boutique", computer science specialty provider, into a proper emergency medical device supplier, with all the processes and certifications required.

Fixed: the total loan amount must be raised in order for funds to be sent to the Lending Partner. If the loan is not funded in full within the fundraising period, the loan will expire and any funds raised will be returned to lenders' Kiva accounts.
Flexible: any funds raised within 30 days will be passed along to the Lending Partner facilitating the loan and they will come up with other sources of funding to cover the rest of the loan amount.
What does "Partner covers currency loss" mean & how could it affect my Kiva loans?
When lending internationally, the local currency in a borrower's country may lose some of its value compared to the US dollar -- requiring the partner to use more of its local currency to repay Kiva in USD. We offer some Lending Partners the option to protect themselves against currency fluctuations by choosing to pass on these losses to Kiva lenders. By bearing this risk, lenders protect the partner and its borrowers from catastrophic currency devaluations and contribute to the sustainability of their operations.
Potential for currency exchange loss is noted on every loan profile under the loan details:
"Yes" means the Lending Partner will cover any currency loss. Lenders will not bear losses due to currency fluctuation
"Partial" means that the Lending Partner has opted to cover losses only up to 10%. If the U.S. dollar appreciates more than 10% against the local currency, those losses will be passed onto lenders.
"No" means that the Lending Partner is not covering any currency losses and all losses will be passed onto lenders.
"N/A" means the Lending Partner disburses loans to borrowers in USD so their loans are not subject to any currency fluctuation.

For partner loans, borrowers apply to a local Lending Partner, which manages the loan on the ground. Lending Partners are responsible for screening borrowers, disbursing loans, posting borrowers to the Kiva website for funding, collecting repayments and otherwise administering Kiva loans on the ground to borrowers.
