A loan helped a member to buy more rice seeds.

Cocurimu Agric Group's story

Cocurimu Agric Group is a group represented by Emmanuel, a 31-year-old father of two children between the ages of nine months and eight years. He is a farmer and has been growing rice for the past 13 years.

With the loan from Kiva, he would like to buy more rice seeds to grow rice. The profits from his business will be used to invest in expanding his rice farm, providing for the family, and paying the school fees for his children.

The agriculture sector accounts for 37% of Rwanda's gross domestic product, generates 65% of Rwanda's export revenue, and employs approximately 90% of Rwandans (as of 2009).

Despite the importance of agriculture to Rwandans and their economy, financial institutions view lending to fund agricultural activities as a high-risk proposition because the profitability of these activities is affected by weather, natural disasters, and price fluctuations. For this reason, farmers in Rwanda remain under-served by financial institutions. Urwego Bank is expanding into this market and is happy to provide Kiva lenders with the opportunity to support Rwandan farmers.

Due to the global pandemic, Urwego Bank was not able to photograph all the members, but Urwego Bank was able to get one representative for the group photo.

In this group: Eugenie, Francois, Valens, Justine, Eugenie, Jean, Pierre, Emmanuel, Celestin, Emmanuel, Alphonse, Jean, Gilbert, Theogene, Liberathe, Jean, Christine, Angelique, Jean, Emmanuel, Delphine, Faustin, Jean, Vianney, Verediyana, Ndabikunze, Marceline, Jacqueline, Antoine, Vedaste, Francois, Jean, Olive, Mukamurenzi, Etienne, Olive, Felicien, Speciose, Jean, Samuel, Celestin, Alphonsine, Clementine, Gakuba, Berancille, Theophile
