Hilda is a 23-year-old married mother of three children (from 18 months old to 7 years old) who sells fruits and vegetables. She has set up a stand outside of her home. She also sells beef. With her income, Hilda is able to help support the family. After planning carefully, Hilda is excited to use her first Kiva loan to buy more fruits and vegetables.
Hilda, along with seven other Maya K’iche ladies, is a member of the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “Patzam”. The group is located in a rural area in the state/department of Totonicapan. In normal times, many of the women in the group sell clothing, but they have had to be innovative during this time of the COVID-19 virus. Now, they sell popular fruits and vegetables. The ladies meet monthly to make loan payments and participate in educational trainings that are drawn from four areas: health, family, women, and business. A facilitator shares the information using games, role playing, pictures, and diagrams. Hilda states, “The information that our facilitator shares with us is very useful. The topics are really important, are relevant, and help us to stay healthy.” Every two months, they receive a visit from a traveling nurse. This useful combination of loans, education, and health care services is called “Microcredit Plus”.
