A loan helped this Field Partner add soap production to its palm oil mill in rural Ghana.

Dr. Bronner's / Serendipalm's story

Dr. Bronner’s and its sister company Serendipalm in Ghana opened the world’s first certified organic and fair trade palm oil production facility in 2009. They purchase raw materials from smallholder organic farmers instead of large plantations, and since partnering with Kiva in 2015, Serendipalm has provided over 850 loans worth $192,000 to farmers to finance seeds, inputs, equipment, and temporary farm labor.

Serendipalm benefits the local community by, 1) supporting over 600 organic smallholder farmers with financing, guaranteed purchase of their harvest, and a ten percent organic premium on top of the market price, 2) providing employment and fair working conditions for more than 250 people in their oil mill, and 3) using its fair trade premium for community development projects like clean water wells and the construction of a birth center.

The global COVID-19 crisis has led to an increase in demand for Serendipalm’s palm oil due to higher demand for soaps. This loan will be used to add the production of soap, cassava flour, and fruit juice in order to diversify the business and increase stability during this uncertain time.

This loan is part of Kiva’s Crisis Support Loan program to assist our Field Partner organizations directly so they can continue to support our borrowers. Because it is part of a pilot program, this loan may have higher risk. Read more in the "More about this loan" section below.
