As a teen growing up in inner-city Philadelphia, I always saw academics as my way out. I did well in school, had a great social life, yet still, that wasn't enough. Throughout high school, college and even as a young professional, no matter how successful I became, I never felt good enough. Like many, I secretly suffered from depression, mostly due to trauma I experienced as a child, but also because everywhere I turned, society was set up to make me feel that I should have been doing more.
When I became a mom 22 years ago, I discovered just how precious life was and decided that I never wanted my children, or any child, to experience those feelings of emptiness, so I embarked on a journey of spiritual immersion and self-fulfillment, moved my family abroad and fell in love with culture and teaching. It was then that I learned success for everyone looks different and shouldn't be pursued at the expense of one's happiness. With this in mind, I was finally able to identify my personal values and strengths which made me truly unique. I became more confident as a mother, teacher and all around human being, and developed a passion for helping students discover the same for themselves, which I did.
Over the course of more than a decade, I’ve worked with students and families, helping them build confidence and reach academic and personal goals they never thought possible. I did this by not only helping them improve their skills, but also their mindset. I want to show today’s teens, our next generation of leaders, that they can be successful academically, and at the same time, be happy and fulfilled. My goal is to share that message with as many teens and parents as possible.

In early 2018, I started Tutor Partners, a virtual tutoring and test prep company, with the intention of reaching more and more families to share my message. My focus has always been on a holistic approach to helping students build overall confidence, so they can excel in school and in life. In addition to academic tutoring, I also provide academic and non-academic (confidence and mindset) coaching for teens and parents.
From the beginning, I realized that the market was saturated with large scale tutoring companies that were all about the numbers and less about student well being. Before starting my own company, I worked for a few of them and discovered a gap between the services they offered families and what truly mattered. Many of the students I worked with had been working with tutors for years, but whenever they were faced with a subject they found challenging, they'd lose confidence again and again. While their tutors had been helpful and taught them strategies to get higher grades, they'd never learned about growth mindset, resilience and perseverance in a way that would help them get through those academic challenges and other obstacles they'd surely face in life.
My small team is completely virtual and since conception, we’ve had the privilege of working with families across Maryland, a few in Seattle, California and Florida. My greater vision is to one day curate an online global community for parents of teens, a space where they can come together for support from like-minded parents, and experts like myself and others who can help them and their families navigate challenging times, celebrate their wins and the little things that truly matter. And as a mom of five, three of whom are teens, this community would serve as a blessing for my family, as well.
What is the purpose of this loan?
I'm applying for this loan to expand my marketing which would allow me to reach and impact more families. With our new COVID world, parents are extremely overwhelmed with the idea of starting the next school year virtually and students are just as anxious about their future. Anxiety levels are high across the board and there is no better time for my company to step up and do our part to help out.
I am also planning the launch of our global online parent community, so some of the funds would go towards paid advertising for that project. I am hoping that this loan will pave the way for the growth my business needs to get to the next level. This would not only make a difference in the lives of me and my family, but more importantly, it would allow me to fulfill my passion of making a difference in the world.

What does "Partner covers currency loss" mean & how could it affect my Kiva loans?
Potential for currency exchange loss is noted on every loan profile under the loan details:
"Yes" means the Lending Partner will cover any currency loss. Lenders will not bear losses due to currency fluctuation
"Partial" means that the Lending Partner has opted to cover losses only up to 10%. If the U.S. dollar appreciates more than 10% against the local currency, those losses will be passed onto lenders.
"No" means that the Lending Partner is not covering any currency losses and all losses will be passed onto lenders.
"N/A" means the Lending Partner disburses loans to borrowers in USD so their loans are not subject to any currency fluctuation.
Do Kiva borrowers pay any interest on their loans?
Our partners collect interest from borrowers because there are many operational expenses associated with microfinance in developing markets, especially in rural areas. Many of Kiva's Lending Partners also provide additional services alongside their loan products such as business training, financial literacy lessons, or health services.
Kiva will not partner with an organization that charges unreasonable interest rates, and we require Lending Partners to fully disclose their rates. In addition, we only partner with microfinance institutions and organizations that have a social mission to serve the poor, unbanked, and underserved.

Lending Partners are responsible for screening borrowers, disbursing loans, posting borrowers to the Kiva website for funding, collecting repayments and otherwise administering Kiva loans on the ground to borrowers.
For direct loans, borrowers apply through the Kiva website and may or may not be endorsed by a Trustee. Unlike Lending Partners, Trustees don't handle any financial transactions or have any duty to repay loans on behalf of their borrowers. Instead, Trustees take the role of providing support and business advice to their borrowers throughout the term of the loan.
