The communal bank María José meets in the productive parish of Picoaza in the province of Manabí. The inhabitants of this beautiful place are mainly informal businesspeople. They sell different items such as clothing, hammocks, kitchen utensils and numerous other products.
Jessenia is one of the members that has been with the communal bank for six cycles. She is in a relationship and is the mother of two children. She spends her time at a community nursery school in the same parish. She has another source of income selling Yanbal and Avon products and underwear. She has been doing this for two years. She visits her customers in their homes and takes their product orders. With the clothes, she travels regularly to buy them by the dozen according to how the sales are going. The loans that she has received from the Foundation have made her business grow. She pays for all of the Yanbal and Avon up front and they let her get the clothes on credit, paying according to how the sales are. By the same token, she gives her customers easy payment options.
With this new loan that she is asking for, she will be able to buy more merchandise and also help her husband with his business. Her husband sells cell phone accessories such as as cases and chargers, in addition to TV remotes.
Jessenia's dream is to finish her studies to become a nursery school teacher. She is convinced that she can make it a reality. She really likes to work with children and from 8 in the morning until 4 in the afternoon she is in the nursery school. Her children are with her all the time. She is happy with what she is doing to help her family get ahead.
