Helena's story

As people from various corners of the earth are joining hands to empower women, the name Helena cannot be left unmentioned. She is a woman who has passed through thick and thin but she doesn’t give up.

Helena (64, a mom of 4 school going children) lives in Makutano with her family. In this region job opportunities are very scarce and the level of poverty has skyrocketed. She is involved in dairy and maize/ corn farming. Her work brings home important income. She gets help with the work of her family members.

Most microfinance organizations, particularly in her area of Kenya, do not give loans to smallholder farmers, but Juhudi Kilimo stands out and is different. Juhudi Kilimo is expanding into this market and is happy to provide Kiva lenders with the opportunity to support Kenyan smallholder farmers.

Helena is humbly seeking a loan to purchase farming inputs such as high-nutrient fertilizer and certified seeds, to improve her farm yield and make more profits to support her family.

Helena is optimistic that this year's harvest will be better than last season's. Income from her dairy business will be used to make loan repayments until the crops are harvested and sold.

Be inspired; make a woman’s life better with a loan.

This loan is special because:

It finances smallholder farmers to purchase dairy cows, chickens, cereals, farm inputs and farming equipment.
