I had the incredibly unique opportunity to manage the Lansdale Farmers' Market from 2013 to 2019 on a part-time basis. During that time, I was able to learn the open-air food market economy, and befriend local, high profile independent food producers. I witnessed food producers live their dream and make six figures (or more) under a 10x10 white tent. It was then, when I realized that I was on the wrong side of the tent.
In January 2018, I made the decision to return to graduate school and obtain a MBA in Food Marketing from Saint Joseph's University. While most people return to school in hopes to obtainn a better job or to get a raise, I returned to school and then resigned from my day job. My last day as the Director of Special Events at Valley Forge Military Academy & College was on November 15, 2018. Two days later, I took a leap of faith and launched Lokal Artisan Foods (Home of the French Toast Bites) in the middle of Philadelphia at the annual outdoor Holiday Market. In the 45 days of that event, my gross sales were 3/4 of the annual salary that I left behind. The immediate success set the trajectory of the business for 2019.

Lokal Artisan Foods, LLC is home to a collection of specialty food & beverage products using ingredients grown and sourced responsibly with respect to origin and seasonality. Our product line includes: Lokal Lemonade, Made-to-Order French Toast Bites and “The Only French Toast Seasoning You’ll Ever Need™”. While “Lokal Lemonade” was the debuting product offering, Lokal Artisan Foods’ is currently driven and centered around the made-to-order French Toast Bites.
French Toast Bites have changed the perception of how and when French Toast should be consumed. The nearly quarter pound, hand cut, lightly fried bites, are tossed in our signature spice blend and served in a convenient portable container. In addition to the traditional recipe, a vegan option is available.
French Toast Bites were developed in response to an opportunity in the open-air food market economy. There are approximately seventy farmers’ markets and sixty annual festivals and seasonal pop-up events in the Philadelphia -five county geographic.
Lokal Artisan Foods’ product portfolio can be characterized as catering to the consumer who demands a high degree of creativity, quality, and convenience in their on-the-go food purchases. Our primary demographic profile are women between the ages of 18-24 who voluntarily self-identify as “foodies”.
After launching French Toast Bites in November 2018, we experienced growth in 2019. In 2019, we participated as a mobile food business in the open-air market economy (festivals, concerts, tourist attractions, universities). You may have seen us in the Philadelphia region at Christmas Village/Holiday Market, the Roots Picnic, Made in America, the Piazza Pod Park, Temple University Homecoming Tailgate, Villanova University Tree Lighting Ceremony as well as in the New York City region at the Bronx Night Market and Harlem Night Market totaling 110 days of events in 2019.

What is the purpose of this loan?
We've been bit by the "Brick & Mortar Bug"! Amid pandemic related event cancellations, our events scheduled through August 2020 have been either cancelled or rescheduled for another later date. Once a local restaurant owner heard of our struggles and she invited us to her brick & mortar location to begin operations temporarily in efforts to stay afloat during COVID-19.
We have had to change our entire business model to the state mandated pick-up and delivery food service structure. Fortunately for us, we were able to pivot and adapt to the storefront restaurant model successfully. As the country begins to re-open, we are looking to transition our current mobile food business to a brick and mortar store front in the city of Philadelphia.

What is the disbursed date?

We allow pre-disbursal because it ensures that the funds reach the borrower as soon as they are needed. Loan funds from Kiva lenders then go to backfill that amount and as a lender you assume the risk of the loan. By doing this, our Lending Partners assume the risk that, if the loan isn't funded by lenders, they will have to fund the loan without any funds from Kiva.
If a partner loan is not pre-disbursed, it will be listed on Kiva with an expected "post-disbursed" date. If a post-disbursed loan is not funded on Kiva, there is a chance that the borrower may not receive their loan. Some Lending Partners choose to disburse loans with other sources of funding, while other partners don't have the resources available to fund loans without Kiva lenders' support. No direct loans will be disbursed unless they fully fundraise on Kiva.

What does "Partner covers currency loss" mean & how could it affect my Kiva loans?
Potential for currency exchange loss is noted on every loan profile under the loan details:
"Yes" means the Lending Partner will cover any currency loss. Lenders will not bear losses due to currency fluctuation
"Partial" means that the Lending Partner has opted to cover losses only up to 10%. If the U.S. dollar appreciates more than 10% against the local currency, those losses will be passed onto lenders.
"No" means that the Lending Partner is not covering any currency losses and all losses will be passed onto lenders.
"N/A" means the Lending Partner disburses loans to borrowers in USD so their loans are not subject to any currency fluctuation.
Do Kiva borrowers pay any interest on their loans?
Our partners collect interest from borrowers because there are many operational expenses associated with microfinance in developing markets, especially in rural areas. Many of Kiva's Lending Partners also provide additional services alongside their loan products such as business training, financial literacy lessons, or health services.
Kiva will not partner with an organization that charges unreasonable interest rates, and we require Lending Partners to fully disclose their rates. In addition, we only partner with microfinance institutions and organizations that have a social mission to serve the poor, unbanked, and underserved.
