A loan helped this field partner to serve vulnerable communities in Burkina Faso whose livelihoods have been affected by the COVID-19 crisis.

Yikri's story

Yikri is a non-profit microfinance organization located in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso. Since 2018, Yikri has worked with Kiva lenders to provide loans to over 2,000 borrowers with more than $1,000,000 lent through Kiva.org. Yikri provides credit, savings, training and social support services to the most vulnerable communities, both in urban areas that lack infrastructure and rural areas where microfinance services are hard to come by.

While historically a stable and sustainable organization, the global pandemic has led to Burkina Faso being under a partial lock-down, with internal movement restrictions and curfews, which has severely impacted Yikri’s operations. This includes a limited ability to disburse loans and receive repayments on the loans they disbursed before the crisis.

Like many businesses around the world, Yikri is unable to operate normally as a result of the crisis, leading to a need to access flexible working capital. This loan will allow Yikri to cover operational expenses including staff salaries and be able to serve vulnerable communities, especially those working in agriculture, for which the season is starting. Your contribution will help support Yikri to weather this crisis.

This loan is part of Kiva's Crisis Support Loan program to assist our Field Partner organizations directly so they can continue to support our borrowers. Because it is part of a pilot program, this loan may have higher risk. Read more in the "More about this loan" section below.
