Born and raised in Chicago, I have loved interior decorating since I was a child. My parents Sam and Ella Cummings and my cousin Thea were the catalysts for this everlasting love affair. However, I had no idea that our shared passion would grow into a business – decades later.
My parents were a dynamic design duo who sewed, reupholstered furniture and collected art from far-flung places. As a young girl, I devoured my mom’s issues of Elle Décor and Architectural Digest. I was her sidekick when she visited fabric and furniture stores or shopped for art at artisan markets. Wherever we went, I was happy to participate in the process of decorating our home.
My cousin Thea was also a great influence. She toured the world as a professional dancer and always brought home beautiful artisanal gifts from her travels. She had a great sense of style and I loved perusing Pier 1 Imports with her whenever she was in town.
Although I loved interiors, I sought a career in graphic design – my second love. I received a B.A. in Arts Management from Columbia College and a master’s degree in Journalism (publication design) from Roosevelt University. After college, I worked as a graphic designer and marketing coordinator for 10 ½ years before my world caved in on me. My parents died two months apart. I ended a relationship, had a surgery to remove an ovarian cyst, and was laid off from my job. This all happened in a three-year period. Devastated, I took a gap year to heal. During that year, I had an epiphany about what I wanted to do with the rest of my life. I wanted to travel, source global art, decorate interiors and help the less fortunate. This is why I founded Global Attic.

Using natural and sustainable materials, our statement pieces are designed to transform bland living spaces, convey individuality and help sustain the global community. Our tagline “Your Home. Our World.” reflects my passion to help create beautiful homes and an even more beautiful world.
Global Attic is a Chicago Fair Trade member. Currently, we work with artisan groups in Indonesia, Haiti and throughout Africa. Our artisans are paid fairly and empowered to share their authentic, culturally diverse stories with the handmade items they make. Selling these items helps the artisans to not only preserve their heritage, but also enables them to procure the necessary resources to support themselves and their communities, financially. With the proceeds from our sales, Global Attic provides assistance to underserved communities around the world through our on-going philanthropic efforts. Our merchandise can be purchased online via our website and at pop-up markets around Chicago.
What is the purpose of this loan?
In a relatively short period of time, we have built a community of loyal customers including retailers, interior designers, stylists and celebrities. Our merchandise has won awards and been featured on the set of a hit Fox television show, in magazines and online. To leverage our success and scale the business to expand our work with artisans and philanthropic organizations, I am requesting a loan in the amount of $8,500.
$3,500 will be used to purchase new inventory from Indonesia and Africa for our summer/fall collections. Ordering new inventory will help us to better meet the growing demand for our merchandise while helping our artisans to support themselves during this difficult time.
$3,000 will be used to fund a marketing campaign consisting of Facebook & Instagram ads and other lead generation tactics to drive more online sales and increase brand exposure within our ideal target market.
$1,500 will be used to hire a professional photographer to take high-quality photos of the new inventory. The photos will be utilized on the Global Attic website, in advertising and in a lookbook that will be sent to trade professionals.

What does "Partner covers currency loss" mean & how could it affect my Kiva loans?
When lending internationally, the local currency in a borrower's country may lose some of its value compared to the US dollar -- requiring the partner to use more of its local currency to repay Kiva in USD. We offer some Lending Partners the option to protect themselves against currency fluctuations by choosing to pass on these losses to Kiva lenders. By bearing this risk, lenders protect the partner and its borrowers from catastrophic currency devaluations and contribute to the sustainability of their operations.
Potential for currency exchange loss is noted on every loan profile under the loan details:
"Yes" means the Lending Partner will cover any currency loss. Lenders will not bear losses due to currency fluctuation
"Partial" means that the Lending Partner has opted to cover losses only up to 10%. If the U.S. dollar appreciates more than 10% against the local currency, those losses will be passed onto lenders.
