Well Crafted is owned by two couples who met at Bucknell University 14 years ago. After graduation we took different career paths, Ryan as an Electrical Engineer, Tom as a Civil Engineer, Laura as an International Education Specialist, and Liz as a Marketing and Special Event Coordinator. However we always shared a similar love of food and the amazing connections it can build. We talked about creating a business together that would support local farmers, businesses, and makers since graduation. We believe that the shared connection people have with food can change a community.
In 2015 we started talking more seriously about starting a business. We all had a mutual love for wood fired pizza. Pizza is such an incredible blank canvas to expose people to the amazing foods that a region has to offer. So we decided to start a mobile wood fired pizza catering business to do just that.
In April 2016, we purchased a restored 1949 Dodge Mobile Pizza Kitchen and catered our first event. Since then, we've catered over 150 events and made hundreds of pizza pals who share a similar passion for locally sourced wood fired pizza and community.
In an effort to expand our impact on our community, we opened a permanent kitchen, Well Crafted Kitchen, inside the Union Craft Brewing Tap Room in September 2018. Since then, we have shared a meal with over 30,000 unique pizza pals and continue to connect people with the local food that surrounds them, provide new job opportunities for local residents, and create an even larger economic impact for our local farmers, makers, and vendors.

Well Crafted is a restaurant and catering business based in Baltimore, Maryland with a mission to connect people with their food, community, and place in the world. We started Well Crafted with a 1949 Dodge Mobile Pizza Kitchen in April 2016 and expanded to a permanent Kitchen space located within UNION Craft Brewing's taproom in September 2018. By expanding beyond our mobile beginnings to a permanent location, we have been able to create an even larger economic impact for our partner farmers and makers from whom we source our ingredients, connect an even larger community of people through food, and provide new job opportunities for over a dozen people. Whether catering a wedding, birthday party, or other celebration with our Mobile Pizza Kitchen, or sharing a meal at the Brewery with our pizza pals, we are dedicated to serving up seasonally inspired wood fired pizzas and eats, all created in-house with ingredients sourced from our favorite Baltimore area farmers and producers.
What is the purpose of this loan?
On March 16, 2020, Well Crafted Kitchen and UNION Craft Brewing made the joint decision to close the taproom and Kitchen in order to practice Social Distancing as mandated by Gov. Hogan in response to the Covid-19 Crisis. Since that date, we have worked tirelessly to reinvent our business to an Online Order Only with Contact-less Dockside Pick-up. We have coordinated efforts with our UNION Collective neighbors and farmer friends to offer their local products on our website. We have done everything that we can to keep as many team members as possible, while maintaining a safe working environment, throughout these uncertain times.
We have a goal of selling 250 pizzas each week in order to cover the costs of our limited team members and our food costs. We have managed to meet those goals each week. However, the money that comes in from those sales, does not allow us to pay the additional expenses that come with running our Kitchen (rent, payroll, utilities, loans, insurance, equipment maintenance & service, food costs, paper supplies, etc.) . We have estimated that through the end of May, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, our sales revenue will be down $130,412 (63.59%) from 2019. A loan of $15,000 will help us pay our current operating expenses (including supporting our team) that we have not been able to pay due to our limited operations during the COVID-19 crisis.

We offer some Lending Partners the option to protect themselves against currency fluctuations by choosing to pass on these losses to Kiva lenders. By bearing this risk, lenders protect the partner and its borrowers from catastrophic currency devaluations and contribute to the sustainability of their operations.
Potential for currency exchange loss is noted on every loan profile under the loan details:
"Yes" means the Lending Partner will cover any currency loss. Lenders will not bear losses due to currency fluctuation
"Partial" means that the Lending Partner has opted to cover losses only up to 10%. If the U.S. dollar appreciates more than 10% against the local currency, those losses will be passed onto lenders.
