A loan helped to buy feed and organic hens to raise on his organic chicken farm.

Aye's story

Aye is 51 years old and has started an organic chicken farm in his native northern Thailand. He is a member of the Akha tribe in Chiang Rai, Thailand, which is one of the several different ethnic groups that make their home across the mountain ranges of southern China, Laos, Myanmar, Vietnam, and Thailand.

For his entire life, he has grown vegetables on family land in the mountains near his home. However, because the prices of his goods fluctuate, his income is very unpredictable and is rarely enough to support his family. Therefore, he decided to work with Hill Tribe Organics to start raising organic eggs. This would be his fourth loan with Kiva.

With this loan, he wants to purchase 700 egg-laying organic hens to raise on his farmland and organic feed for them. Selling the eggs will provide a continuous monthly income for his family and will allow them to clear his family's debt. He has demonstrated himself to be a very responsible caretaker of hens.

This loan is special because:

It supports vulnerable hill tribe communities in the northern region of Thailand.
