A loan helped to buy merchandise, underwear, clothing, shoes and sweaters.

Pedro Antonio's story

“Tienda y Miscelánea M & J” is a general store started by Pedro G. and his wife Ruth María six years ago. Little by little they gradually watched it grow until they came to Chibolo Magdalena to begin a new life in the community of Soledad. At first they started with a small tavern in the city of Camelot and later they used their savings to buy a lot upon which they built. They were able to unite the couple’s two careers: his, selling provisions and drink and hers, selling merchandise via catalogue. The catalogue business gradually grew and now occupies an area of her husband’s big store. He is soliciting a loan from the Fundación in order to replenish the store’s stock of clothing, footwear, and sweaters which he sells to Magdalena’s population.

Pedro G. learned about business from his mom, an exemplary woman and very business oriented. Today with his wife Ruth María, also a businesswoman, he has advanced and has in addition to the general store, a business providing services such as internet and photocopying.

Pedro has noticed that his business has grown with the 3 loans provided by the Mario Santo Domingo Foundation. He has been able to improve the infrastructure of equipment and furnishings. He now has the capacity to offer new services and pay an assistant. Perhaps most importantly, he is able to acquire merchandise “without agonizing over expensive credit”. This family knows where it is going and has a great enthusiasm for their business because, as Pedro says, it has given his family everything. His young sons want to participate and he occasionally allows them to help, as long as it doesn’t interfere with their homework. They are excellent students and school is the one thing he will not compromise.

His dream is to continue to build his home and buy a car in order to save on the daily costs of transport for his businesses which can amount to more than $500.000 a month. His major challenge is having enough ready cash available to buy in bulk when the merchandize that his customers need arrives.
