Fifteen years ago, Maria became a widow and was left with the sole responsibility of raising six children who are now over the age of 15. She became a seamstress and currently has three sewing machines and sews sports clothing. Maria has one employee. Her income has supported the needs of her many children. Her youngest son still lives with her and attends high school. The other children are adults and have their own professions and households. She is currently requesting a Kiva loan to buy rolls of fabric.
Maria is the President of the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “Rosas Blancas” located in a rural area in the department/state of Totonicapan. There are six other Maya K'iche ladies in the group who are seamstresses and sell dairy products. They look forward to their monthly meetings that are now held over the telephone because of the coronavirus. It is crucial that they learn about the importance of hygiene (washing hands, dis-infecting surfaces), health, and nutrition, as well as family matters and women’s issues.
They also learn how to manage their businesses effectively. Another topic that is especially timely is how to prioritize expenses and save for unexpected emergencies. This month’s topic is “Moving Ahead”. The ladies get new ideas about how to move forward creatively and strengthen their businesses during this challenging time.
