Concepcion, a member of the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “Sector Nueva Jerusalen Group”, weaves traditional clothing. She shares with Kiva investors, “Traditional textiles are part of our identity and an integral part of our culture. Our clothing is admired by people from all parts of the world!”
Since she is single and lives with her parents, 24-year-old Concepción earmarks part of her income from weaving wrap around skirts or “cortes” to help them with household expenses. She has five wooden looms and employs five people who are able to support their own families! Looking toward the future, Concepcion anticipates increased business with the Easter holidays fast approaching, and orders are rapidly coming into the business. She is requesting her second Kiva loan to buy cones of thread and tools for the looms.
There are seven Maya K’iche ladies in the Trust Bank who live in the department/state of Quiche. They attend monthly non-formal educational sessions that cover a variety of topics on health, women’s rights, family and business. They receive preventative health services through a mobile health program because Friendship Bridge understands that good health is the foundation for a successful business. Many times, the ladies will share that their health barriers are the reason they are unable to achieve success! The combination of loans, education and health care is called “Microcredit Plus”.
