A loan helped to buy more sugarcane.

Shamim's story

Shamim is 20 years old and lives in the town of Bombo, in the Luwero region of Uganda. For the past two years, Shamim has been working hard to manage her food stall, selling sugarcane.

To help expand her business, Shamim has requested a loan of 500,000 Ugandan Shillings (UGX) from BRAC Uganda. The loan will be used to buy more sugarcane, and will help Shamim to generate greater profits. Shamim will use the profits of the business to buy personal items for herself, like clothes and shoes, as well as to pay house bills and provide basic needs for the family, like food, thereby improving their standards of living. Shamim hopes that in the future, she will be able to open up a beauty salon in order to generate more income.

Shamim is a member of BRAC's Empowerment and Livelihood for Adolescents (ELA) program. In addition to microfinance loans, the program provides both a safe place for young Ugandan women to take part in group activities, and a forum for life-skills training.
