The 52-year-old talented weaver Julia, a member of the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “Bella Vista,” shares, “Traditional handmade textiles woven on floor and backstrap looms are valued not only in Guatemala but in other countries throughout the world.” Julia designs and weaves traditional blouses or ”huipiles.” She wants to remain competitive in her local market and offer new designs.
Julia is requesting a KIVA loan to buy a variety of high-quality thread in various colors at the wholesale level. Some of her income will be earmarked for the education of her children because she understands the tremendous value of a good education.
Julia and seven other ladies benefit greatly from the educational trainings at their monthly meetings. After making loan payments, the women participate in these trainings designed by a facilitator who uses pictures, diagrams, role playing and games to share the information. Topics like effective business management practices can be applied immediately to their businesses. Information about health, hygiene, nutrition and the importance of prioritizing expenses are essential to their own success and that of their families. They also learn about self esteem and empowerment. Every other month, the women have access to basic health care services. Friendship Bridge calls the combination of loans, education and health care services “Microcredit Plus.” It is highly effective.
