Sonia, age 38, has been selling tortillas for several years. It has been her source of work. She was motivated to start in order to be able to support her four children with an education and what they needed to grow. Her husband works as a messenger.
Sometimes she gets tired because she gets up early to grind the corn and then pat the tortillas into shape. She sells the tortillas in the morning for breakfast, and she delivers them to restaurants.
What she wishes to buy is a large stove so she does not have to move around so much. She wishes to use this loan to buy various “quintales” (a quintal is 100 pounds) of corn because sometimes it is scarce or more expensive. She will buy wood, lime, and bowls to carry the corn in order to keep increasing her sales and be able to cover her expenses.
Her plan for the future is to be able to tile the kitchen because it has a dirt floor. She wants to do this for better hygiene. She also wants to plaster the house where it needs it. She hopes to do this in the short term.
