A loan helped investing in raw materials for dressmaking, such as fabric, thread, and a cutting table.

Martha Cecilia's story

Martha Cecilia Díaz is 44 years old, is separated, and is the mother of three children, ages 21, 15, and 13. She lives in the Compartir La Margarita neighborhood in the southwestern part of Bogotá. Her home is near the Portal de las Américas, the terminus station of the TransMilenio—a Bogotan concept in transportation that combines aspects of metro systems with those of buses and which makes it possible to travel quickly to different parts of the city. Her dressmaking shop is also located in this neighborhood—her business is called “Dotaciones Macedy”, and she started it about 7 years ago. During the last 5 years she was training and she is currently making a living entirely from dressmaking.

This is Martha’s second loan. She used her previous loan to purchase a sewing machine and an overlock stitching machine, which made it possible for her to generate more profits in her business. She wants to invest her current loan in raw materials, supplies, and a cutting table. She says that one of her biggest challenges is not having a cutting table, since she has to go to a friend’s shop to cut cloth and then go back to work at her own shop. In the longer term, her dream is to expand her shop so that she can provide jobs for other mothers who are supporting families.
