A loan helped to buy pandanus for her weaving and also hire women to help her with the weaving.

Kafo'atu's story

This is Kafo'atu. She is 42 years old. Her husband is a carpenter, and they have eight children. Kafo'atu runs a business of weaving, where she is self-employed and she does her weaving at her own home. She weaves taovala, mats and fihu, both with white and brown pandanus. When her product is ready, she sells it at the local market, from their home, and most of the time, she sends it overseas. Her husband was their main provider, but his wages were never enough for the family, for you see, it is not just one or two children, but there are eight of them. So Kafo'atu decided to start a weaving business and help her husband with providing for their family.

She is a member of a katoanga group, where women from overseas came to Tonga, with the aim of buying mats and tapas from local women. They will conduct this katoanga in December. Therefore, Kafo'atu applied for a loan in order to buy pandanus and hire more women to help her with weaving her products for December's event.
