The secretary of the Community Bank of Puente de Amistad "Cruzche I" is María, 23 years old. Maria was able to attend school for three years. She is a married woman and a mother determined to provide a better life for her 2-year-old son.
She has two businesses: a convenience store, and she fixes thread that she then sells by the pound.
Maria needs to stock the shelves of her store for the holiday season, and for that, she is requesting her first loan with Kiva. She will buy a variety of products such as rice, milk, bread, drinks and some pyrotechnic games.
There are seven women in the communal bank that is located in the Department (state) of Quiché. They are of K’iche ’Mayan descent, and proudly wear the colorful traditional dress. These women have textile businesses, convenience stores, sell food, and raise animals (chickens, goats, and pigs).
In addition to access to the loan, these women learn a lot in the monthly training on business, health, women's and family affairs. A facilitator designs and shares these themes and uses role plays, images and diagrams for better understanding. They are eager to learn new topics. Twice a month, women also attend health clinics where blood pressure, glucose, weight and height tests are performed. This effective combination of loans, education and health services is called "Microcredit Plus."
