Victor's story

We are two men of color whose lives have been shaped and saved by running. I am from a Mexican neighborhood in San Jose, and as a child, I ran 3 miles to and from school every day. I was kicked out of 6 high schools, but went on to run in college, first at a community college, and then UCLA. As the first and only person in my family to go to college, running was the consistent activity that kept me committed to my education and my health. I went on to pay this forward as a teacher in alternative schools, juvenile hall, and as a mentor to thousands of the most underestimated youth. And all the while, I kept running. I've run competitively at distances from one to 50 miles, completed Ironman triathlons, and coached hundreds of young athletes.

My partner came to the United States from Eritrea at age 10. With the support of the Bay Area running community, he went on to compete in the 2000 Summer Olympics and pursue a competitive career as a Nike- sponsored middle-distance runner. He has remained close to his roots and maintained an active role in his community through volunteer work, coaching, and teaching at his alma mater UC Berkeley and City College of San Francisco.

As a duo, we are motivated every day to share our love of running with others, and more importantly, to use running as a vehicle to create a more compassionate, supportive, and healthy community in our hometown of Oakland.
