For more than 5 years, Marcela, 36, started 2 businesses. She sells chicken meat and has two standing looms where she makes typical skirts called "cuts." Marcela became a member of the Community Bank of Friendship Bridge "Las Flores Pajales". Here Marcela found support by having access to small loans and educational training. She is married and is the mother of 4 children over 7 years old (her youngest daughter appears with her in this photo). Thanks to the income generated by these businesses, she can send her children to primary and secondary school. Older children support the development of 32 “cuts” that are delivered monthly. Marcela is well known in the textile market for her high quality designs and innovation. To increase her inventory, she is requesting the 1st KIVA loan to buy yarn in different colors.
There are 7 Maya K’iche women in the communal bank who did not have the opportunity to receive formal education. They continue to learn in the monthly educational training on relevant topics such as business management practices, health, hygiene, nutrition and self-esteem. Every two months, women have access to basic health services and have Pap tests, blood pressure and a method of spacing pregnancies. The combination of loans, education and health services is called "Microcredit Plus".
KIVA lenders who finance loans for women like Marcela are very important in their integral development. Thank you!
