I come from a family of entrepreneurs, my grandparents, father, and mother all owned their own business. So it was no surprise to my family when I opened my first business in 2013. I was the startup investor of a small Parkour gym outside of Boston, it was never a dream of mine, but it was a passion project. My business partner and I learned so much about being business owners and growing a community of customers. After a few years, I realized more and more that this was not where I was meant to be.
In 2016 I moved from Boston to Detroit, for a new opportunity and a new relationship. Not long after, my boyfriend and I bought a home in the North Rosedale Park. During my first week of living in this neighborhood, I discovered this shop and fell in love. When I heard it was for sale, I was worried that the coffee shop I loved would be gone. I had a discussion with both my business partner in Boston and my life partner about this opportunity. After that, I knew it was meant to be, I got bought down from my other business and with the co-signing of my life partner, I was able to buy the shop.
When renaming the shop, I wanted to pay homage to what was here before. I did this in two ways: by naming the shop after the City Hall that used to occupy the space and by naming the LLC after my grandmother. She was such a role model to me growing up and without the money, she left me after her passing I would have never been able to open my first business.

We offer some Lending Partners the option to protect themselves against currency fluctuations by choosing to pass on these losses to Kiva lenders. By bearing this risk, lenders protect the partner and its borrowers from catastrophic currency devaluations and contribute to the sustainability of their operations.
Potential for currency exchange loss is noted on every loan profile under the loan details:
"Yes" means the Lending Partner will cover any currency loss. Lenders will not bear losses due to currency fluctuation
"Partial" means that the Lending Partner has opted to cover losses only up to 10%. If the U.S. dollar appreciates more than 10% against the local currency, those losses will be passed onto lenders.
