Tumenyane Group's story

The Tumenyane group (the word means "let's support each other" in Kirundi) is a Community Group which is on its ninth loan cycle with Turame. The biggest portfolio of Turame loans is made up of community loans.

The president of the group, Fatuma M., is a merchant from the Kanyosha district of the capital, Bujumbura. She owns a little shop where she sells various items, including foodstuffs and women's "pagnes" (colorful African print cloth). She has had her shop for 12 years and she has been able to save up enough to buy a plot of land where she hopes to build her own house.

Fatuma is the mother of seven children. The eldest is 18 and the youngest only 9 months old. Six of the seven children are enrolled in school, and Fatuma is also raising two orphans and another child of people close to her. She hopes that her children will have a brighter future that the children themselves will choose.

In her business, she faces two big challenges: the cost of buying her goods and the poverty in Burundi which limits demand for the goods. She uses her profit mostly for daily necessities but also to add to her savings.
