Digna is 38 years old and a member of the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank, El Triunfo, in the department / state of Suchitepequez. She is married and the mother of three children who range in age from 2 to 12. Her husband works in a factory where various dairy products are processed. Digna buys dairy products like cheese and cream from the factory to resell. Part of her income goes to the education of her school-age children. Her goal is to have her own shop to process dairy products like cream and cheese.
Digna is requesting a Kiva loan to buy more dairy products including dried milk.
There are nine ladies in the Trust Bank who have various businesses that include the sales of icy treats and regional snack type foods like tamales, and also personal care products. They support each other at their monthly meetings and after making loan payments, participate in educational training. They gain essential business tools like budgeting, planning, investing and savings, as well as information about health, nutrition, hygiene and the use of medicinal plants. Digna shares that the topics of over-indebtedness, solidarity and how to open new businesses have been especially interesting to her. Every other month, the women have access to basic preventative health care services. Friendship Bridge calls this effective combination of loans, education and health care Microcredit Plus. It works!
