A loan helped to buy farm inputs such as fertilizer and seeds so that a single mom can grow more vegetables and provide a better life for her four children.

Wanjiku's story

Wanjiku is a single mother of four children who lives in Nyahururu, a town surrounded by prime agricultural lands which favor large-scale grain farming, dairy and horticultural farming. Thanks to her daily efforts, she has managed to give her children a good start by providing them with a good quality education. Wanjiku’s primary sources of income are crops and animal farming. She also earns some income from a personal business.

The Nyahururu area is a favorable area for farming, so Wanjiku is seeking a loan to buy farm inputs such as fertilizer and seeds to enable her to grow more vegetables, reap maximum profits, and also increase her business.

Being a woman and accessing funds in Kenya, especially the Nyahururu area, is very challenging, but Wanjiku feels relieved knowing there are institutions such as Kiva that help enterprising women like her. Her goal is to improve her living conditions and secure the future of her children. Her biggest dreams are to be able to support her family by herself, to become independent, and to buy a home. This loan will ensure a future rich harvest and income.

Wanjiku is so grateful for her lenders' understanding and support to empower a woman who lives alone with no husband.

This loan is special because:

It finances smallholder farmers to purchase dairy cows, chickens, cereals, farm inputs and farming equipment.
