Francisca is treasurer of the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank, “Mujeres de Pasaquiquin,” in the department/state of Totonicapán. Like most of the women in her group, she had only a few years of formal education. She shares, “I have a third grade education. However, without a doubt, I'm so proud to have opened my own business.”
She has a textile business sewing colorful aprons and tablecloths. She has six sewing machines and works with her husband in the business. Their textiles are popular and sold in six nearby markets. The couple is able to support their five children who range in age from 8 to 26. Francisca is requesting her third Kiva loan to buy a large roll of fabric.
There are seven Maya K’iche women in the Trust Bank who have an average of three years of formal education. Their Kiva loans will be used in their businesses, buying and selling plastic baskets and textiles.
They meet monthly to make loan payments and participate in educational training covering an aspect of four topics: health, family, women and business. Francisca shares, “We're really able to improve our businesses with the new information we learn, like planning and investing.” They thank Kiva investors for the essential role you play in their lives!
