A loan helped to gain access to cost-effective hybrid seeds and fertilizer to cultivate her crops, allowing her to use the profits from her farm to improve her life.

Rael's story

Meet Rael, the 33-year-old mother of 2 school-going children. Rael wakes up early every morning to tend to her farm. She lives in the Nandihills area of Kenya.

Rael adores her children and despite the many challenges she has gone through, she has always provided good care for them. In a period of economic stagnation, Rael has worked constantly to maintain the family's reputation. She works very hard on her mixed farm. The Nandihills area is a favorable one for farming, so she is seeking a 80,000 KES loan through Kiva's field partner Juhudi Kilimo. She will use it to buy farm inputs such as fertilizer and seeds to enable her to grow more vegetables, reap maximum profits, and increase the size of her business.

It is very difficult for women to access funds in Kenya, especially around Nandihills. Rael feels relieved knowing there are institutions like Kiva that help enterprising women like her. She is always working to improve her family’s living conditions; her biggest dreams are to become independent, to support her family by herself, and to secure her children’s future.

Be part of this mother’s dream by lending to her.

This loan is special because:

It finances smallholder farmers to purchase dairy cows, chickens, cereals, farm inputs and farming equipment.
