A loan helped a member to buy a floor loom and a variety of yarn.

La Cumbre Group's story

Brenda is a member, along with eight other Maya K’iche’ women, who are members of the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank, La Cumbre. They live in a very rural area of the Department of Quiché in the highlands of Guatemala that requires traveling on dirt roads and forest trails. The women live in adobe houses that consist of three rooms used for sleeping and cooking. They are enthusiastically beginning their first loan cycle with Kiva. They plan to invest the loans into businesses that include the weaving of traditional cortes skirts and the yarn wrapping to make textiles.

One of the members is 24-year-old Brenda, who is married and a mother of two children, 18 months and 4 years. She attended high school and studied accounting. Brenda wants her children to graduate from high school. To fulfill this dream, she and her husband have a corte weaving business. Brenda wants to expand her business, so is requesting her first Kiva loan to buy a floor loom and a variety of yarn. Brenda visualizes creating a better future for her family.

Brenda attends monthly meetings of Friendship Bridge's Microcredit Plus program that offers loans, education and healthcare services. She has learned about the importance of taking care of her children, being a good business manager, and caring for the health of her family.

The women of the Trust Bank are very grateful for the generosity of Kiva lenders. Many thanks to each of you for helping them to create a brighter future for themselves!
