Patricia's story

I am a registered nurse from Chicago and am the primary caregiver for my 94 year old mother, who has vascular dementia. She requires 24 hour care and I established a team of live-in caregivers for her in 2017 when she first became ill. As funds began to dwindle, I needed a plan for her care that would bring in additional income. I am still working full-time and working another nursing job was not an option.

My mother was a legendary baker when she was in good health and her specialty was pound cakes. I have always been a good cook and I decided to carry on her legacy of baking pound cakes. I practiced baking every weekend for almost two months before taking orders online. I started a Facebook page for Mom's Pound Cakes and baked over 30 pound cakes the first month of operation and doubled that in the second month. I have targeted the medical community, who have been supportive of my mission and I have started to see repeat customers. My motivation is to use my creativity in order to care for my mother for the rest of her life, as she encouraged creativity in me all of my life. My goals are to enter the frozen food industry with my gourmet pound cakes as well as to provide employment for the semi-retired and retired community.
