A loan helped a member to buy chickens, turkeys, and pigs to fatten up and sell in local markets.

Las Campesinas Group's story

Small scale livestock farming plays an essential role in third world countries like Guatemala. Antonia, a 33-year-old married mother of three children (10-16) raises animals in the department state of Suchitepequez and is a member of the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “Las Campesinas.”

She is determined to be a successful entrepreneur and partners with her husband in the business. The couple buys and sells turkeys and pigs that they sell in local meat markets. They are able to cover household expenses with their income, and they are proud to fund the education of their three children who attend the 2nd, 6th and 9th grades. Antonia wants to see them graduate from high school. She is requesting her first Kiva loan to buy more turkeys and pigs to fatten up and sell.

There are 10 ladies in the Trust Bank who share common goals of raising the standard of living for themselves and their families. Their monthly educational trainings, part of the “Microcredit Plus” program of loans, education and healthcare services are important for their empowerment. They are able to manage and improve their food and animal husbandry businesses as they learn about budgeting, planning, investing and savings. They also learn to more effectively care for their families’ nutrition, hygiene, and health and for their self-esteem of women’s rights, roles, and bodies.

Antonia and her friends benefit greatly from the generosity of Kiva investors and the “Microcredit Plus” program of Friendship Bridge. Thank you!
