Tanis is the coordinator of her group, Amor y Amistad (Love and Friendship), and her story is representative of her group and of Esperanza's Haitian and Dominican clients (many of whom recently emigrated to the Dominican Republic from Haiti) generally. Her group is located in the Samana peninsula, a lush, rugged area with a nascent tourism industry, where running water (none of which is potable) and electricity are unreliable. She makes her home here in a simple structure with her husband and three children.
Tania is excited to be taking her tenth loan with Esperanza after having successfully repaid her previous loans and grown her business. She plans to use this loan to invest in her beauty salon by purchasing a basin for washing hair as well as a line of hair products, including shampoo and straighteners. She will use the profits to invest in her children by purchasing food, shoes, pencils and backpacks for them. She would also like to purchase a vehicle. Finally, she would like to invest in her business by securing a locale for it that is in a high traffic area and which is big enough to accommodate an ice cream shop as well. She thanks you all for your support.
