A loan helped to buy farm supplies and increase poultry stock.

Betty's story

Betty is 39 years old and married with seven children, ranging in age from 10 to 22 years old. Six of her children are currently enrolled in school. Betty has been running a mixed farm for over ten years just outside of Kitale, Kenya, in the western region of the country. She sells maize, milk, and cereals as the primary source of her income, while also earning money selling second-hand clothes and blankets in her town. She says that the main challenge right now is occasional bouts of disease spreading through her livestock.

Betty recently completed her first loan with Juhudi Kilimo for KES 30,000, and has now requested this loan for KES 50,000 to expand her stock of poultry and acquire necessary farm supplies. She also wants to use a portion of the loan for school fees for her children, as she repeatedly stresses the importance of education. She says that the extra income from this loan will hopefully enable her to send all of her children through school, and eradicate poverty in her family. In the future, she would like to continually improve on her farming abilities and provide for her extended family.

Betty is thus far very pleased with her association with Juhudi Kilimo/Kiva. She is proud of the changes she has witnessed in her own family and her town, and hopes that one day all of her needs will be met through continued cooperation with Juhudi/Kiva.
