The Communal Bank “El Buen Samaritano” (The Good Samaritan) consists of thirteen members who are starting their third loan cycle with Asociación Arariwa. They are hardworking individuals who look for every opportunity to get ahead and strive to proviD. their children a better future. The members live in the city of Urubamba, which is in the Department of Cusco. It is a city that is characterized by its beautiful landscapes, its agriculture, and its livestock. Urubamba is located an hour and fifteen minutes away from the city of Cusco. The members have different businesses selling condiments, groceries, vegetables, fruit juices, and small animals. Others proviD. services such as bartending, metalwork, hair styling, and sewing. The members who have businesses selling vegetables are concerned that their sales will decline because vegetable prices are getting higher. Heavy rains for three consecutive days over Cusco have caused the Vilcanota River to overflow, impacting crops and causing severe losses.
Prudencia is a member of the Communal Bank “El Buen Samaritano”. She is 56 years old, in a common law marriage, and has two grown children. Prudencia is a native of the community of Chinchaypucllo in the city of Anta, but she has been living in Urubamba for the last twenty years. She sells vegetables such as peas, carrots, and onions. Her business has been in existence for two years and she has done very well because of her commitment to her work. She is requesting a loan so that she can buy 20-30 sacks of vegetables.
Carolina is a young mother who is 25 years of age, married, and has two daughters, Zadith and Juliana. She is a seamstress who mends pants, skirts, shirts, and other articles of clothing. Since 2007 she has owned a place of business at the standard market in Urubamba where she works. The loan she is requesting will be invested in her house.
