A loan helped to buy some materials for her business of making tapa and also to help in the renovation of her house and with her children's school fees.


Mele's story

Greetings from Tonga. Meet Mele, she's 50 years old and a mother of six children and three grandchildren. Her family lives together in their own home on the eastern side of Tongatapu. There are seven of them all together living in the house.

She requested a loan from SPBD; this is her second SME loan. She was posted on Kiva last year and she was successful in repaying that loan.

She's currently running her two businesses of a renting her plow for planting and also making tapa, which is a patterned cloth made from the bark of the mulberry tree. Her husband helps her in doing the plowing, which is paid by customers, while she makes tapa with three other women in the neighborhood. They makes all sorts of tapa and sell it to people overseas. She uses her earnings to help her family and especially with her children's education. Three of her children are currently attending school. She also uses her earning to make her loan repayments every week.

Mele's business runs very actively. In the photograph, her soft mulberry are hanging from the line behind her, ready to make her tapa.

She has a vision for the future and she's working hard to become a very successful businesswoman.
