Rosa's story

I was born/raised in San Jose, CA. Living here all of my life I have seen it change, and like so many others I struggle to figure out how to keep my place here.

From 2016 to 2018 my husband and I lived with my parents. Mom has had Lewybody dementia (8 years) and dad has had type 1 diabetes (37 years). Over this two year time period, my husband's parents and his Schizophrenic brother were in jeopardy of losing the apartment they were renting in Sacramento because of increasing rent prices. While living with my parents in San Jose (thus not paying rent), we decided to purchase a home in Sacramento to provide my husband's family a safe and reliable place to live. 2018 was hard. Long story short: for 4 weeks my husband, my mom and myself were homeless staying with friends, family and at motels, due to a legal dispute with my father. In the end, mom decided to return to him. One week after, my dad was admitted to the hospital because he had an ulcer on both of his feet, which warranted an amputation, and was diagnosed with kidney disease. Because of this, my husband and I returned to my parents' house to start over. We were hopeful that things would change, that our lives would change, but one month later my father returned home, so we decided to move out of my parents' house once and for all. This decision was the most difficult I have had to make thus far.

Today we are supporting ourselves in Silicon Valley, paying full rent and bills for the apartment we live in and the house in Sacramento where his family lives. For us, this business means looking to the future.
