Jayne's story

My story is one that begins with exclusion, and injustice. Growing up in rural Kansas as part of an agriculture family, coming to terms with my identity as a trans-woman was filled with fear, ridicule, depression and sadness. Rural life and agriculture did not feel like a healthy, safe, and welcoming environment for someone like me to grow and flourish in. The wide open spaces and endless horizons of perfect rectangles of field grown corn, wheat, and soybeans felt like anything but opportunity. After transitioning I quickly left rural life in search of community and acceptance in New York City... and I found it. Finding a community of like minded people helped me learn who I am, without feeling the shame of being different. However I am a country girl at heart. My heart yearns for the air and my hands reach for the dirt, and farming is magic. After 7 years in New York I moved to the Hudson Valley in pursuit of my dream to became an organic vegetable producer as a part of the "Pro-Farmer Program" at the Hudson valley Farm Hub where I received a wealth of experience and knowledge in production practices, and business management. Now I have a unique opportunity to actualize my goals and start my own farm, in pursuit of my vision of justice. The act of growing food connects us to the natural world and to each other in a way that is unique. Creating sustenance, and strength from the energies of nature should be a right of all humans, and those of us who take up this mantle should not feel excluded from it because of our gender identity, sexuality, race, class, or physical ability.
