A loan helped to purchase farming inputs such as high-nutrient fertilizer and certified seed.

Stellah's story

Stellah is an ambitious smallholder farmer from the Nyamira area of Kenya, an abundant maize-producing region in the Central Province of Kenya. Stellah is a very hardworking and self-driven mother. Despite adversities, she just smiles, and she is known in her village for her undying and resilient nature.

Agriculture is one of the most competitive industries in Kenya, especially due to the high costs of operations. Such costs include land acquisition and expensive inputs. To meet these high costs, farmers have been forced to borrow from financial institutions that sometimes impose very complicated procedures. When Stellah learned about Juhudi and Kiva from a Juhudi Kilimo loan officer, she became interested in the good work that Kiva does to support smallholder farmers. Stellah is happy to have access to reliable micro-finance.

Stellah keeps dairy cows and grows various crops on her farm. Her main challenge is the high cost of farming inputs in her area. She is will use this loan to purchase high-nutrient fertilizer and certified seed. She expects that this will improve her farm yield and therefore increase her sales profits enabling her to better support her family.

Lenders, if there is someone you should lend to, that person is Stellah! She will not let you down.
