Jeffrey's story

I was born in Jamaica Queens, New York, where my parents met. I later moved to Mandeville, Jamaica for 7 years as a child with my father. After moving back to the states I became a Police officer because it was a tradition in my family. I am third generation police officer. Being an officer for 17 years has been a true task and journey for my family. All the family time lost, eventually took a toll. Then the era of the Freddie Gray incident occurred where the riots consumed Baltimore and things went downhill for the Police dept.

At that time, I was hurt and had surgery that placed me on the desk for a 1 yr & 1/2 to recover. Now, I have a three year old son and a fiancé, whom I love dearly. Long story short, I started the "what if" syndrome. What if, I couldn't provide for my family anymore? It laid heavy on my heart and I prayed and prayed about it until I was losing sleep for months. So when I decided to pursue my passion it was a huge decision that my family supported. I then started from the ground up by buying and building my now food truck called, "J Bee's Jamaican Me Crazy." I am now proud of where I am today. To have walked away from a stable career, to pursue my passion and dream, speaks volumes as to who I am. Constantly, jumping through hoops to make it happen. Now, my food truck engine went up and must be replaced, to continue my journey that I'm very passionate, persistent and consistent about. I have been helping people my entire police career and now, with the help of Kiva, I will continue my work in the community through food.

This loan is special because:

It helps a former police officer bring his passion of Jamaican food to his local community.
