A loan helped to buy fertilizers and improve her tea crop farm.

Peninah's story

Peninah (pictured in her tea farm plucking her tea) is responsible for both parenting and earning a livelihood for her children. She is a rural smallholder farmer who learned her knowledge of farming from her parents. She is determined to pass on this knowledge to her village counterparts in the Nyamira area of Kenya. The results of her determination are the smiling faces of her children.

Peninah requested a loan from Juhudi Kilimo for 25,000 KES, which she will use to buy certified seeds and high-nutrient fertilizers to expand her tea farm. Unlike most microfinance organizations in Kenya that have imposed very complicated procedures for funds acquisition, thereby discouraging smallholder farmers, Juhudi Kilimo is working closely with Kiva to make loan acquisition for smallholder farmers easy and convenient.

By scaling up her business, Peninah will reduce production costs and increase her output. She believes that through the loan, she will turn around her family life and be able to give them a happy life.

This loan is special because:

It finances smallholder farmers to purchase dairy cows, chickens, cereals and farming equipment.
