A loan helped to purchase raw materials, such as pandanus, for her weaving business.

Kakala's story

Kakala is a 46-year-old, married woman and mother of five children, all of whom are currently attending school. She runs a weaving business located in her village. She does not employ people to help in her business, but the people of the village do help each other. When she finishes weaving her mats and ta'ovala, she sells them at the market to earn income for her family and for her loan repayments. She only faces challenges when she does not have enough raw materials for her business, such as after cyclone Gita struck Tonga last February. She received her loan from SPBD and used it to overcome her challenges in order to earn more income for her business and her family, which is her priority. Kakala joined Kiva last year, successfully settled her loan, and is now applying for another loan to help her business to earn more profits. Kakala's plans are to educate her children for a better future.

This loan is special because:

It provides women with credit in a country where alternative financing is extremely scarce.
