Jana's story

I am a mother of 6 children, and the oldest daughter in a family of 4. My mother didn’t have a very stable childhood (her father was away in the military service a lot) and she was separated from her siblings and passed from one family to the next since her mother wasn’t around either. Because of my mother’s experience growing up, she instilled in me the importance of keeping the family together and having the responsibility of caring for others. This value lead me to become a nurse so I would have the skills to take care of my family (parents, siblings, husband, and children). Over 27 years of nursing, I’ve become aware of the importance of living a healthy lifestyle and teaching others to do the same. I became interested in the healing power of plants. The name “Ho’omana” in our business name Ho’omana Plantations, means “to make” and “energy/life force”. The coffee farming business brings our family together among the 3 generations (parents, my husband and I, and our children). Although we’re starting off as a coffee farm as our primary business with the knowledge being passed down to us by my parents, we intend to expand the business to grow medicinal plants among the coffee trees to be used to help others heal. I want to do this by harnessing the healing power of plants and nature. I also have a Masters of Business Administration (MBA) with a focus in Healthcare, so I understand the business side of healthcare which helps me in running the farm business as well.

This loan is special because:
